Softball Shuts Out Saints in Sunday Sweep

Behind a trio of home runs and eight shutout innings from Molly Broccolo in the circle, the University of Rochester softball shut out St. Lawrence University over 12 innings at Southside Field, taking game one of the doubleheader, 6-0, before run-ruling the Saints in game two, 8-0. With the doubleheader sweep, the 'Jackets remain unbeaten in Liberty League play, moving to 17-5 (6-0 LL) with their 11th-straight win, while the Saints fall to 9-9 (4-2 LL).

Rochester's game-one win over the Saints also marked Coach Abby Hurley-Martin's 200th career coaching victory, reaching the milestone with her 72nd victory at URochester.

Game 1: Rochester 6, St. Lawrence 0
The Yellowjackets would waste no time taking the lead against the Saints, with Riley Laygo following Ally Kim with back-to-back singles to give URochester a 1-0 advantage. Kim led off the bottom of the first and beat out an infield single, and after Kim stole second, Laygo singled through the right side to bring Kim around to score.

Then, after Molly Broccolo stranded a pair with one of her four strikeouts in game one, Rochester got back on the scoreboard on Savanna Hernandez's RBI single in the bottom of the second. But despite loading the bases against Marleigh Monroe, the Saints' starter struck out a pair to keep the 'Jackets' lead at just two.

Broccolo stranded two more in the top of the third, this time striking out Isabel Moreno with runners at first and second, before a 9-4-3 double play helped the senior pitch a 1-2-3 fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hernandez extended Rochester's lead to 3-0 with one swing, launching a solo home run to left field on the first pitch she saw from Monroe.

Maddie White then relieved Broccolo to start the fifth, and quickly set down the first six Saints she faced, striking out one in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Despite Monroe retiring the first two Yellowjackets she faced in the sixth, Rochester took advantage of a trio of St. Lawrence errors to tack on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Laygo again knocked in Kum with an RBI single after Kim drew a four-pitch walk, while Marie Kinchington brought home two more with a two-run single to right center.

St. Lawrence would look to answer in the top of the seventh, loading the bases on three-straight hits by Marina Juan, Monroe and Abby Gallas. But White struck out Emily Wendt looking, and then got Maeve Thompson to ground into a fielder's choice to save the shutout and give the Yellowjackets a 6-0 victory.

Broccolo (7-4) earned the win, holding the Saints to just four hits while striking out four over 4.0 innings pitched, while White notched her first save of the season with three scoreless frames and another four strikeouts.

For St. Lawrence, Monroe (4-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on 11 hits, walking three and striking out nine.

Four 'Jackets turned in four-hit days at the plate, led by Hernandez, who went 2-for-3 with a home run, run scored and an RBI. Laygo went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, run scored and two RBI, Kim went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and two runs scored, and Jensen Sminchak went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.

Game 2: Rochester 8, St. Lawrence 0 (5 inn.)
Just like in game one, after Broccolo pitched a scoreless first, the 'Jackets got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the stanza. With Sminchak at first and two outs, singles from Julianna Lyons and Kinchington gave Rochester a 1-0 lead, before Rowan Mulholland's RBI double made it 2-0 'Jackets.

And after Broccolo struck out a pair to strand two more and send the Yellowjackets back to the plate in the bottom of the second, URochester broke the game open with a five-run second inning.

Ilana Weiss led off the inning and reached on a dropped fly ball, but was retired at second on Hernandez's fielder's choice. Up next, Hannah Reardon got Kim to foul out and looked to get out of the inning unscathed, but back-to-back singles from Laygo and Sminchak put Rochester up 3-0, with Laygo's single scoring Hernandez, while Sminchak's put runners at the corners.

Lyons and Kinchington then went back-to-back to give URochester a 7-0 lead, with Lyons' three-run blast making it 6-0, before Kinchington's solo shot extended the advantage to seven.

The 'Jackets would tack on another in the bottom of the third on Hernandez's RBI single to right, scoring Katelyn Wade after a leadoff double, while Broccolo worked a 1-2-3 frame in the top of the fourth, adding two more strikeouts to her final line.

In the fifth, Saira Ramakrishnan relieved Broccolo and pitched a scoreless frame to close things out, stranding two Saints at second and third to finish off the 8-0, run-rule-shortened victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Broccolo (8-4) picked up another win in the circle, holding the Saints in four hits, walking one and striking out five over 4.0 innings pitched. Reardon (0-2) took the loss for St. Lawrence, allowing eight runs, three earned, on 10 hits, striking out one over 2.1 innings pitched.

Laygo, Sminchak, Lyons and Kinchington, Rochester's two through five hitters, contributed eight of the 'Jackets 11 hits, with Lyons leading the way with her 2-for-3 performance with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

Kinchington added a home run, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, while Sminchak was one of three 'Jackets with a double, along with Mulholland and Wade, and one of five with an extra-base hit in game two.

The Yellowjackets will wrap up their six-game homestand on Tuesday, April 14, with a non-conference doubleheader against Alfred University at Southside Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
