Second-Half Rally Powers URochester Past RPI

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Despite trailing by three at the halftime break, the University of Rochester women's lacrosse came from behind for the second-straight contest, outscoring Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 6-2, in the second half to come away with a 10-9 victory on Saturday afternoon inside Edwin Fauver Stadium.

With the win, the 'Jackets move to 11-4 (7-2 LL) on the year, tying their second-highest win total in program history, and their most since 2002. With the loss, RPI falls to 6-8 (3-6 LL).

Rochester's seven Liberty League wins are also the most in program history, with the Yellowjackets in the midst of their first five-game winning streak since 2002. At 7-2 in the conference play, the 'Jackets have also clinched a top-four seed in the Liberty League Tournament, and will host a conference tournament game for the first time in program history.

Senior Alyssa Gorny also tied Jenny Rogers `02's single-season record with 77 points (57 goals & 20 assists) with her game-winning score with 1:11 remaining in the fourth.

Audrey Silverman would get the Engineers on the scoreboard first, as the 'Jackets would play from behind for much of the contest. RPI scored the first three goals of the game, Silverman's just shy of the 14:30 mark of the first, while goals from Camille Stackhouse and Beckett Houston extended the Engineers' lead to 3-0 midway through the opening stanza.

Jenna Kessler got the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard with 6:19 left in the first, cutting RPI's lead to 3-1, while the 'Jackets took advantage of a player-up opportunity late in the first to pull within one after one.

With 1:17 left in the first, Anna Rogers scored her first of a team-high three goals on the day, beating Halley Feaga off Allison Weiden's assist to make it a 3-2 game.

Just under six minutes into the second, Rogers would score again, this time to tie the score at three-all with an unassisted score. But the Engineers would answer back just shy of two minutes later, with the first of two scores to retake the lead.

Houston scored again, this time with a player-advantage to give the Engineers a 4-3 lead, while Abigail Couzens made it 5-3 with 6:16 left in the second.

Jenna Kessler answered Couzens score with an unassisted tally of her own with 4:18 left, but RPI would score twice to take a three-goal lead into the halftime break. Kacey Pritts took advantage of another player-up opportunity for the Engineers, while Quinn Wollard beat the buzzer off Silverman's assist with just six ticks left to give RPI a 7-4 lead at the half.

Rochester would begin its comeback in the third though, holding the Engineers scoreless for the entire period, while tallying a pair. Rose Bunting pulled the 'Jackets within two with 9:08 to play in the third off Gorny's assist. While despite being a player down, Tessa Little converted a free-position attempt with 5:32 left in the quarter to make it a one-goal game.

The Engineers would take the ball into the final period and quickly score to go back up two goals, with Wollard firing in a free-position attempt less than minute into the fourth. Feaga then kept Rochester off the board on the 'Jackets ensuing possession, as the Engineers' goalie kept the 'Jackets off the scoreboard with a pair of saves.

However, Rochester would force a shot clock violation defensively, and again get going offensively, with the first of two scores to tie the game at eight. Rogers scored her third, this time off Little's assist, with 8:42 remaining to again pull URochester within one. And after Gorny won the draw, Little notched another assist, this time finding Weiden to level the score at eight-all with just over seven minutes left.

RPI answered back again, scoring with another player-advantage to go up a goal with 5:36 left. And after two turnovers, the 'Jackets still trailed with 3:39 remaining. But after Stackhouse's shot sailed wide, the 'Jackets took things the other way.

Weiden would tie it for the Yellowjackets just shy of the two-minute mark, with her assisted score again leveling the score, this time at nine. And after winning the ensuing draw, Rochester called a timeout, and following an Engineers foul, earned a free-position attempt with a chance to take their first lead.

Gorny sank the free-position attempt, her first goal of the game, putting Rochester up 10-9, and the 'Jackets won the ensuing draw again, and looked to kill clock. But despite a late turnover, Gorny came up with another big play, forcing a turnover by RPI as they took things the other way.

Rochester would then run out the clock to seal the victory, their fifth in-a-row, wrapping up their regular-season, home slate with a 10-9 win.

Offensively, Rogers was one of three 'Jackets with three points, along with Little (1 G, 2 A) and Weiden (2 G, 1 A).

Defensively, Gorny and Lorelei King each had a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Gorny also led URochester in the draw circle with six draw controls. In goal, Isla Ablin made eight saves to earn the win.

Rochester will wrap up the regular season on the road in Schenectady, NY on Saturday, April 25 with a matchup against Union College at 4:00 p.m.
