Rochester Rolls Past William Smith in Women’s Tennis

Three individuals finished as double-winners, as the University of Rochester women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over visiting William Smith College on Thursday evening at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Lauren Kallas, Sanjana Karnam and Neha Dania all picked up wins in both singles and doubles to power the Yellowjackets to the win. URochester's victory levels the teams record at 7-7 on the season, while the Herons dropped to 5-6 overall.

Rochester started out strong with wins in all three doubles matches to go up 1-0 early on. The team of Dania and Kallas were quick 6-1 winners at number two, while Lilly Caldwell and Esther Wang posted a 6-4 victory at third doubles to secured the team doubles point.

Karnam and Jasmin Toor battled in the closest doubles match of the three at number one, edging Haley Levin and Grace Magna in a 7-5 match.

Three consecutive straight-set wins for the Yellowjackets secured the overall victory as play shifted over to singles. At four, Hailey Kornbluth won 6-1, 6-1 over Bethany Walker for the first singles point.

Katie Yang followed at number one with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Mae Kellersman. Kallas ended up earning the clinching point at third singles, winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 against Magna.

The Herons earned their lone point of the evening from Levine at the number two match against Toor, with that ending as one of two 3-set affairs. Levine edged Toor 4-6, 6-4 and 10-8 in the tiebreaking third set.

Karnam grabbed the momentum back for URochester with a strong 6-1, 6-1 showing against Mia Jacobs at fifth singles, before Dania edged out Kaitlyn Hardy in the final match of the day at six.

Dania rallied after dropping the first set 6-3, with a 6-4 second set win, ultimately securing the final match point with a 14-12 tiebreaker score.

The Yellowjackets continue their end of season stretch next weekend, playing at Brandeis University on April 11, starting at 2 pm. UR closes out the regular season with two more home matches, hosting Vassar and SUNY Geneseo, the following week.
