Baseball Drops Pair in Midweek Matchup at Hamilton

CLINTON, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team fell twice in its midweek doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals on Tuesday afternoon at the Loop Road Complex. The Continentals took game one against the Yellowjackets, 9-2, before holding on to take game two of the doubleheader, 3-1. With the two losses, Rochester drops to 12-18 on the year, while Hamilton moves to 14-14 with the two wins.

Game 1: Hamilton 9, Rochester 2
Sam Loeb got the start for Rochester and pitched a pair of scoreless innings, but after the 'Jackets made a call to the bullpen to start the bottom of the third, the Continentals strung together six runs on five hits to take the lead.

Aidan Watts relieved Loeb, but two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Ethan Righter, whose sacrifice fly got Hamilton on the scoreboard. Two more Continental runs came home to score on a passed ball and Lucas Herman's RBI single, while after Hamilton re-loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch, the Continentals would score three more on a throwing error and Chester Boynton's RBI single.

Now trailing 6-0, Andrew Lenhard relieved Watts and got a strikeout to end the bottom of the third, but Colin McMahon continued to keep URochester's bats at bay, working a 1-2-3 top of the fourth.

Theo Beckley settled things down on the mound for UR and pitched a scoreless fourth, and the 'Jackets would break through in the bottom of the fifth against McMahon. After the 'Jackets loaded the bases on Tristan Datta's single, Grady Davis' hit-by-pitch and George Farley IV's walk, Carlos Barajas reached on an error to bring home a run, while Teddy Monahan followed with a sacrifice fly to cut Hamilton's lead to 6-2.

A strikeout, though, allowed McMahon to strand a pair and prevent any more damage, and the Continentals would answer back an inning later in the bottom of the sixth.

Righter's two-run double made it 8-2, while Herman followed with an RBI single off Derek Llanes to extend Hamilton's lead to 9-2.

That'd be all the Continentals needed, as Mantas Kempinas closed out game one with a one-hit seventh, giving Hamilton a 9-2 victory.

McMahon (1-2) picked up the victory for Hamilton, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits, walking two and striking out three over 5.1 innings pitched.

Watts (0-2) took the loss for Rochester, allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits and one walk over 0.2 innings pitched.

Datta went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Rochester at the plate, while Barajas and Monahan each had an RBI.

Game 2: Hamilton 3, Rochester 1
Hamilton would again strike first in game two in the third, but this time, the Yellowjackets limited them to just one run in the frame. Zach Herzog got the start for URochester and pitched a scoreless frame, while Christopher Trucano followed with another scoreless inning of work, in what amounted to a bullpen game for the Yellowjackets.

Carlos Castillo started for Hamilton and stranded the bases loaded in the top of the second, while Trucano stranded a pair in the bottom of the frame.

In the bottom of the third, though, the Continentals would plate a run on Satish Raichur's bases-loaded walk, but Kevin Carpenter-Holmes worked out of the inning without allowing another run, stranding the bases loaded with a flyout and strikeout.

Hamilton would push across another run through in the bottom of the fourth, as Boynton led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, and quickly came to score on Noa Oyadomari's sacrifice bunt and an ensuing throwing error.

Again, though, Rochester's bullpen kept the Continentals to just one run, with Carpenter-Holmes and Ryan Arora working to again strand the bases loaded.

Hamilton's pitchers, though, would hold the 'Jackets to just four hits over the first five innings, before the 'Jackets broke through against Andrew Millington in the top of the sixth. Jake Goldberg pinch-ran for Declan Jack after Jack's one-out walk, took second on Randy Davis' groundout and came around to score on Grady Davis' RBI single to pull URochester within a run.

However, the Continentals would tack on an insurance run on Raichur's second RBI of the day in the bottom of the sixth, and despite putting the go-ahead run on base in the top of the seventh, William Rickens and Hamilton would eke out the game-two victory.

A walk, a fielder's choice and a single brought the go-ahead run to the plate in Benjamin Garber in the top of the seventh inning, forcing the Continentals to make a pitching change and bring in Rickens to relieve Millington.

Rickens struck out Garber, but then hit Datta to load the bases; however, Rickens got Jake Bentivenga to fly out to nail down the save and give the Continentals a 3-1 victory.

Carpenter-Holmes (0-1) took the loss for Rochester, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits, walking three and striking out two over 1.1 innings pitched.

Kyle Egidio (1-1) earned the win for Hamilton, holding Rochester scoreless over an inning of work.

At the plate, six different 'Jackets tallied a hit, with Grady Davis going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, while Monahan went 1-for-4 with a double.

The Yellowjackets will resume conference play when they return to the diamond on Friday, April 24, making the short trip to Henrietta, NY to open a three-game, weekend series against RIT. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., with games two and three at Towers Field scheduled for Saturday, April 25, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
