Softball Falls in Extras Before Rebounding in Split DH

BUFFALO, NY – The University of Rochester softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with host Buffalo State University on Wednesday afternoon at the Buffalo State Softball Field.

URochester's long win streak came to an end in extra innings in the opener, a 6-5 loss, before the Yellowjackets were able to rebound with a 10-4 victory in the nightcap.

The split moves Rochester's record to 24-6 overall on the season, while the Bengals now sit at 18-10 in 2026.

Game 1: Buffalo State 6, Rochester 5 (8 innings)
In the opener, the Yellowjackets were able to get on the board first in the top of the opening frame. Ally Kim reached on an infield single and quickly stole second. An error by the left fielder allowed Riley Laygo to reach, but Kim stayed put on second. After a strikeout, Rowan Mulholland reached on a ground out to plate Kim, putting the visitors in front 1-0 in the early going.

Buffalo State strung together some hits in the bottom of the second to grab a 3-1 lead. A leadoff single was followed by back-to-back doubles, with Natalie Burck's 2-bagger scoring two runs to give the Bengals the lead. After a pair of groundouts, Ashley Jedrich reached on an infield single, with Burck scampering home for the 2-run lead.

The next inning, UR's Laygo blasted her team-leading tenth home run of the season to left field, trimming the deficit to one.

In the bottom half of the third, BSU got that run right back, with Izzy Pezdek singling to right field, scoring Lexi Quagliana.

Rochester again battled to get within one in the top of the fourth when Ilana Weiss singled to center, scoring Julianna Lyons. On the play though, Katelyn Wade was thrown out at third, ending the scoring threat.

Buffalo State made it three straight innings with a run in the bottom half, getting an RBI single from Mya Hurley.

The Yellowjackets threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings, but stranded two runners on in both innings, eventually heading to the final inning of regulation trailing by two.

In the seventh, a Bengal error allowed Kim to reach to lead off. Laygo doubled off the wall in right, with Kim coming all the way around to score, cutting the lead to one. After a strikeout, Mulholland laced a single to center, scoring Laygo to tie the game up. She was stranded at second though, leaving the game tied.

Buffalo State saw its first two batters reach in the bottom of the seventh as well, but Maddie White escaped getting a sacrifice bunt, strike out and lineout to send the game to extras. Kim made a terrific play on the third out, robbing Pezdek's potential game-winning hit on a line drive up the middle.

The eighth inning saw the tiebreaker rule in place, with runners starting on second base. Rochester stranded two runners on in the top of the frame, while Buffalo State converted, with a Yellowjackets error allowing the game-winning run to cross home plate.

Laygo finished 2-for-4 with a double, home run, 2 RBI and 2 runs to lead the URocheter offense. Kim also had two hits and scored twice, while Wade finished 2-for-3 with a walk.

In the circle, Molly Broccolo started and went three innings, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs (3 earned) and 0 walks, striking out 1. White finished off the last 4.2 innings, surrendering 3 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 1 walk while striking out 6, taking the loss.

Pezdek went the distance for Buffalo State, striking out nine 'Jackets. She allowed 8 hits, 5 runs (3 earned) with 2 walks.

Game 2: Rochester 10, Buffalo State 4
After giving up the early lead to the Bengals, allowing the hosts to score two in the first innings, URochester scored ten of the next 12 runs in the contest to earn a game two victory.

The Bengals jumped ahead early, getting a bases loaded walk from Erin Paolilli and Quagliana fielder's choice RBI to make the score 2-0 after one.

A big second inning for the Yellowjackets gave the visitors the lead for good. An error started things off before Lyons singled and Wade walked to load the bases. Weiss drew another walk to put URochester on the board and two batters later, a wild pitch scored the tying run.

With two runners in scoring position, Laygo stayed hot, ripping a single to center to score two, putting UR up 4-2. Mulholland followed with an RBI double to make it a five-run frame.

Broccolo stranded two runners on in the Buffalo State half of the second inning with a big strikeout.

In the third, the Yellowjackets expanded their lead with four additional runs. Two came on a Lyons home run to center field, with two more coming on a Laygo 2-run single towards shortstop.

The Bengals got back into the scoring column in the third, capitalizing on three walks, one hit and one error, scoring two runs to make it a 9-4 URochester lead.

In the fifth, Laygo picked up her fifth RBI of the game, singling to right to score Kim who reached on an error.

For the game, Laygo went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and a run scored. Lyons was 2-for-4 with a home run, 2 RBI and a run scored, while Kim had one hit, but scored three runs. Weiss and Marie Kinchington each scored two runs in game two.

Broccolo started game two as well for UR, and went two innings. Saira Ramakrishnan tossed four innings of relief and earned the win, while Quin Caretti pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the 'Jackets.

Rochester's next game day is set for Saturday at home against conference rival Union College. That DH, starting a 2 pm, will serve as Senior Day for the Yellowjackets.
