PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester men's soccer defeated the Oswego State Lakers, 3-0, on Wednesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium, posting its third, home shutout of the year.
The Yellowjackets, now 3-3-2 on the season, held the Lakers (2-3-1) to just two shots, only one of which was on goal, outshooting Oswego, 13-2 for the contest.
A first-half goal from
Pasquale Carusone gave Rochester the lead, while two second-half scores from
Milos Bisenic and
Johnny Makula sealed the victory.
URochester put the pressure on Kyle Rose and the Lakers' defense early, with
Will Fallona firing the 'Jackets' first shot of the day just under three-and-a-half minutes in, a volley that sailed wide across the face of goal.
Two minutes later, off a long throw-in,
Jared Golden turned and put the first shot on goal on the contest, ripping a shot at Rose that the Oswego keeper was forced to save.
Rose would make two more saves on shots by Fallona and Carusone in the 17th minute, before Carusone would put one past the Oswego goalie at the 23rd-minute mark.
Charging down the near sideline,
Jasper Danielian chipped the ball ahead to
Nico Ranieri, whose one-touch pass found Carusone in front of goal. The junior settled, spun, and flicked the pass into the back of the net, past the outstretched arms of Rose to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.
On the other side of the field, the Lakers earned four first-half corners, but couldn't get a shot off to challenge the Yellowjacket defense, and UR would head into the locker room with a one-goal lead.
Oswego then earned another corner early on in the second half, but again, the 'Jackets defended it and held the Lakers without a shot.
Neither side would put much pressure on either keeper until the 71st minute, when the 'Jackets earned the second of three corners on the night.
Milos Bisenic took it for Rochester, and needed no help to score, doubling the Yellowjackets' lead with a goal directly off the corner that he curled just inside the far post.
Oswego would look to counter, as Jacob Bachrach put the Lakers' lone shot on goal of the contest, but
Mateo Stremi forced Bachrach to take the shot from a tough angle, and
Aidan Hartman came up with his lone save of the contest.
And just a few minutes later,
Johnny Makula would put the finishing touches on Rochester's shutout win, extending the 'Jackets' lead to 3-0 in the 80th minute. Carusone pushed the ball ahead to Makula on the right wing. Using some fancy footwork, Makula shook his defender and found an open look on goal, firing the ball to the far post to make it 3-0.
Down three goals, the Lakers would push forward and look to salvage a late score, but Rochester defended three more corners, blocking a shot from Vladimir Lavrynenko in the 84th minute before the final buzzer sounded.
Individually, Carusone led the 'Jackets with four shots, while Makula tallied three. Danielian and Ranieri notched assists for UR, while Hartman made one save in goal.
The Yellowjackets are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 26, when they host York (PA) at 12:30 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
