MEADVILLE, PA – The University of Rochester field hockey team turned in a dominant performance on Sunday, closing the weekend with a 3-0 victory against Allegheny College at Robertson Turf Field.
Junior
Hannah Mehta scored twice and added an assist, with
Erin Foley picking up the other goal for the Yellowjackets (7-2). Allegheny falls to 5-4 with the loss.
Rochester dominated the contest from start to finish, outshooting the Gators 12-0 in the opening quarter, leading to an eventual 31-3 advantage in shots. The Yellowjackets also combined to earn 18 penalty corners, while limiting the Gators to just one.
UR opened the scoring at the 8-minute mark of the first quarter, with Mehta sweeping in a 3-yard shot off an endline cross pass from teammate
Isabelle Torralba.
The lead doubled with eight minutes to go in the second quarter, as Foley notched her fourth score of the season. The play started with a penalty corner, with
Sophia Marcotte inserting. Mehta received at the top of the circle and took a sweep towards the right post where Foley was waiting and stuck out her stick, redirecting the ball into the cage.
Allegheny ended the first half with just one shot, that by Caroline Smith which went wide early in the second.
90 seconds into the second half, Mehta scored her second of the game to build URochester's lead to three. It was a razzle-dazzle as Mehta received a corner insert, faked a pass left, took one dribble right and then ripped a blast into the low right corner of the net. The junior leads the Yellowjackets with seven goals on the year.
Later in the third, Allegheny's Megan Seymour got the Gators' lone shot on goal, trying to tap-in a cross from Smith at the goal mouth, but UR keeper
Madeline Mitchell made the save, preserving the shutout.
A minute later Allegheny earned their lone corner and got a shot off, but Teagan Ressler's shot was blocked.
The Yellowjackets let off the gas in the fourth quarter, only getting off five shot attempts, none of which ended on frame.
Allegheny's goalie Rowan O'Toole finished with 11 saves, with
Riley Leeser earning the start after playing the opening 30 minutes for the Yellowjackets.
Rochester's next game is in five days at Vassar College, with the Yellowjackets opening up Liberty League conference action on Friday at 4 pm.
