ERIE, PA – The University of Rochester field hockey team earned another victory on Sunday, defeating Ohio Wesleyan University 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Mercyhurst University.
Four different Yellowjackets found the back of the net for URochester (2-0), with
Hannah Mehta recording a goal and assist to lead the Yellowjackets.
URochester scored twice in the second quarter and boosted its lead to 3-0 through three before the Battling Bishops notched a goal in the fourth quarter. UR answered with a late tally in the fourth to reach the final score of 4-1.
The win pushes Rochester's win streak versus OWU to seven straight, dating back to the 1991 season. Overall, the all time series between the Battling Bishops and Yellowjackets is 7-1 in favor of Rochester.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Yellowjackets got the opening score of the game from Mehta after a rebound in front of the OWU net.
In the final minute of the half, the lead doubled, as
Breanna Bovey tapped in a pass from
Kirsten Matzky in front of the cage.
Just before the halftime buzzer sounded, UR keeper
Katherine Jensen made a save in the Yellowjacket cage to keep the Yellowjackets in front by two.
Three and a half minutes into the second half, Mehta found
Molly Newbold for the third UR goal of the game, shortly after a Mehta shot was saved by OWU keeper Payton Mindel.
Early in the fourth quarter, Newbold nearly scored her second of the game, but a defensive save from the Battling Bishops Annabel Fauver kept it a 3-0 Yellowjackets lead. Newbold's rebound attempt sailed wide of the net.
With five minutes left in the contest, OWU's Morgan Leeper found the cage for the Battling Bishops, to cut into the lead, only to see URochester's
Isabelle Torralba regain the three goal advantage in the 58th minute of the contest, making the score 4-1.
Overall in the game, the Yellowjackets led 22-8 in total shots, with 18 of those attempts ending on target. In goal, Jensen made three saves for URochester, while Mindel made nine stops for the Battling Bishops. OWU did lead in penalty corners, taking ten to UR's seven in the contest.
