He comes to the University from Allegheny College where he was on the Gator sidelines for the past 11 years. While at Allegheny, Gillespie filled a variety of roles on the coaching staff, ranging from OL and DL coach to offensive coordinator, QB, RB, TE and WR coach. He also assisted with recruiting and video breakdown.
Prior to coaching at Allegheny, Gillespie coached at Tri-State University (now Trine) where he was assistant football and track and field coach for three seasons. From 1999-01, he was a student assistant at Defiance College.
Gillespie's playing experience includes being a 4-year letterwinner at Augustana College along the defensive line. He helped the Vikings capture two CCIW conference championships and reach the 1994 NCAA Division III playoffs. He also lettered in track and field at Augustana where he was a thrower (shot put and discus).
