Aaron Toomey joins the University of Rochester men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2021-22 season.
Toomey brings with him to the River Campus a coaching resume that includes a stint as the Amherst College Interim Head Coach (2019-20) and assistant coaching jobs at Vassar College (2020-21) and Amherst (2015-19).
In addition, Toomey has served as Co-General Manager and Head Coach for The Nerd Team in the 2021 and 2022 edition of The Basketball Tournament (TBT). While with the The Nerd Team, Toomey coached former UR All-American John DiBartolomeo ‘13 in 2021, along with several other players from high academic institutions in the United States. In 2022, The Nerd Team won two games and reached the tournament’s third round before falling to the eventual tournament champions, Blue Collar U.
At Vassar, Toomey assisted with game preparation, scouting, individual development and recruiting, while also serving as a facilities assistant within the Brewers athletic department.
During his interim season at Amherst, Toomey guided the Mammoths to an 18-8 record and 7-3 mark in the NESCAC. During that season, he was selected to the Under Armour 30 Under 30 Team, honoring the most outstanding men’s college basketball coaches under age 30.
As an assistant at Amherst, Toomey coached under David Hixon, one of the winningest college basketball coaches in NCAA history. His primary responsibilities included scouting, recruiting, program logistics and individual training regimens for players.
Toomey played four seasons at Amherst College and helped lead the Mammoths to four straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. He was named the 2013 AP National Player of the Year and 2014 D3hoops.com National Player of the Year. He helped guide the Mammoths to a Division III National title in 2013 and was selected to the D3hoops.com All-Decade 1st Team for the 2010’s.
Following his Amherst playing career, Toomey played one season of professional basketball for CB Getafe in Spain.
Toomey has the career Amherst scoring record at 2,033 points and also is at the top of the Amherst record book in free throws made and three pointers made and single-season free throws made and percentage.
He graduated from Amherst in 2014 with a Bachelors degree in English and earned his Masters degree in Sports Management from UMass-Amherst in 2018.
