UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER YELLOWJACKETS
Luke Flockerzi

Luke Flockerzi

Luke Flockerzi came to the University of Rochester to continue a legacy of success that spans more than 100 years. He has done that admirably in his first fourteen seasons and has built a résumé on the Yellowjacket sidelines that few coaches in school history can match. He currently is the third all-time winningest coach in program history.

As head coach, Flockerzi (pronounced: flah-CURT-see) has guided teams at Rochester to two UAA championships, in 2011 and 2013, and has made the NCAA Division III Tournament six times. He currently has a record of 223-122 (.646) at Rochester including a 102-80 (.560) mark in conference play.

During his 15 years, UR has accumulated a 136-45 (.752) record at home, including a streak of 35 straight victories at the Palestra spanning three seasons. That mark also includes 20 straight wins in UAA play at home. His overall coaching record (17 seasons) is 260-186 (.583).

Under Flockerzi, Rochester has accumulated 43 All-UAA honors and has had four conference Players of the Year along with one Rookie of the Year. Four players (John DiBartolomeo, Sam Borst-Smith, Ryan Clamage, Ryan Algier) combined for a total of seven All-America honors beginning in 2010-11. Additionally, UR has had three College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans® (Mike Labanowski, Ryan Algier) since Flockerzi took over as head coach.

Rochester played nine teams that finished the year ranked in the D3hoops.com Top 25 in 2024-25, as UR went 7-18 (1-13 UAA) against the second-toughest schedule in the country. The 'Jackets captured the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout title with wins over St. John Fisher and Nazareth, and added several more regional wins, including over SUNY Cortland and Ithaca, while senior Logan Jagodzinski capped off his career with Honorable Mention All-UAA honors.

In 2023-24, playing the toughest schedule in the country, the Yellowjackets finished 10-15 with the second-most regionally-ranked wins within New York's Region III. The 'Jackets swept their games at the UAA Challenge, while UR placed four on the All-UAA squad, including UAA Rookie of the Year Malachi Moore, and junior Logan Jagodzinski earned both All-District and All-Region honors. In addition to his coaching duties, Flockerzi served as Chair of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee, with the title game setting a Division III Men’s Basketball Championship attendance record.

During 2022-23, The Yellowjackets rattled off wins in 12 of their first 14 games and vaulted into the top-5 in the D3hoops.com poll. Rochester also played the toughest schedule in Division III and ended up earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament. UR had three All-UAA selections and two All-Region picks. Flockerzi's 200th win at Rochester came against #18 Trinity (Texas) in November.

The year prior in 2021-22, Flockerzi was named Region 3 Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com and guided two players to All-Region accolades, with the Yellowjackets making NCAA's as an at-large selection.

The 2018-19 season saw the Yellowjackets achieve a Division III top-25 ranking nearly all season long, and finish the campaign with a 21-6 mark overall and 10-4 record in league play. Rochester, the runner-up in the conference, earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament and hosted a first-second round regional, advancing to the second round.

In 2016-17, Flockerzi guided Rochester to the NCAA Elite 8, the furthest UR tournament run since the mid-2000’s, finishing with a 24-5 overall record and 10-4 mark in the UAA. The Yellowjackets hosted a regional pod in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. After reaching the sectional rounds, UR upset host #8 Marietta before falling to top-ranked Whitman College in the national quarterfinals. The Yellowjacket head coach was selected as East Region Coach of the Year by the NABC and D3hoops.com.

2012-13 season saw UR post a 22-5 record and were co-UAA champions with a 10-4 conference record. The Yellowjackets ascended to the #1 ranking in Division III following the team’s 18-0 start. Rochester reached the NCAA Division III playoffs and advanced to the second round. Flockerzi was named a finalist for the 2013 Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award.

Flockerzi was instrumental in the development and success of John DiBartolomeo ’13 who was a consensus 1st Team All-American and Jostens Trophy nominee in 2012-13 and was named Division III National Player of the Year by both D3hoops.com and DIII News. The coach also has led UR to rank first in NCAA Division III in 3-point FG percentage in the 2011-12 season (.417) as well as free throw percentage following the 2012-13 year (.804). The ‘Jackets have set school records for free-throw percentage during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, breaking the mark set by the 1991-92 team which advanced the NCAA Championship.

Flockerzi’s first year at Rochester was a tremendous foundational season. The Yellowjackets were 12-2 in UAA play and clinched the Association title before the final week of the season, ending with a 22-6 overall record. UR reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament, and Flockerzi and his staff were named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year and the D3hoops.com East Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Prior to becoming head coach, Flockerzi served as an assistant coach for one season at Rochester in 2006-07. Afterwards, Flockerzi was hired to be the head coach at Skidmore College in June, 2007 and quickly built the Thoroughbreds into one of the top teams in the Liberty League.

In three seasons in Saratoga Springs, Flockerzi’s teams showed dramatic growth. By the 2009-10 season, Skidmore was 16-10 overall, 9-5 in the Liberty League. The program tied school-records for overall victories and conference wins while finishing in second place in the Liberty League standings. In addition to the success on the court, his team led the league with six All-Academic Team selections.
