The University of Rochester men’s soccer program welcomed its newest staff member, assistant coach Kyle Schauls, to campus in early March 2013. Schauls spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Western Michigan University, where he was a part of building the Broncos into a regional power and regular contender at the top of the Mid-American Conference. Head Coach Chris Apple on Coach Schauls: “I am thrilled to have Kyle join our coaching staff and soccer program at the University of Rochester. His experiences at WMU and his expertise in fitness and goalkeeping make him a great addition to our team. I am most excited for our players who will have the opportunity to learn from and be mentored by such a bright and committed person. I know Kyle will make us better and I am excited to work him as we continue to strengthen UR Soccer.”
2012:
Schauls’ final season at Western Michigan was also one of the team’s most successful, posting an 11-6-2 overall record that fell one win shy of the school record. Additionally, the squad earned a team GPA of 3.45, good for second highest in all of NCAA D-I men’s soccer. Three players earned All-MAC in the fall of 2012 (one first team and two second team selections), and four players earned Academic All-Conference honors. WMU spent 12 straight weeks ranked by the NSCAA in the top 10 of the Great Lakes Region, as well as receiving votes for the National Top 25 for a total of 3 weeks during the season. A former goalkeeper at Wartburg College, in Waverly, Iowa, Schauls worked closely with the Bronco goalkeeping unit, which posted a .91 GAA on the season (the Broncos’ lowest such mark since 1989). His other responsibilities included overseeing the areas of compliance, recruiting, travel, academics, equipment, video analysis, camps, community outreach, and scouting.
2011:
After spending one year as a volunteer assistant, Schauls moved into the top assistant coach role prior to the 2011 season. Schauls helped Western Michigan make its second straight appearance in the Mid-American Conference championship game in 2011, as Western Michigan defeated then-defending national champion Akron in the tournament semifinals. WMU also posted a signature regular-season win over in-state rival Michigan, defeating the Wolverines for the first time ever in Ann Arbor. The Broncos produced two second team All-MAC honorees and three MAC All-Tournament Team selections.
2010:
Schauls has been part of the rebuilding process at Western Michigan, which has seen the Broncos return to the upper echelon of the Mid-American Conference. WMU had one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2010, reaching the conference tournament championship for just the third time ever and finishing as runners-up in the regular season, trailing only eventual national champion Akron. The Broncos posted an overall record of 10-8-2, going 4-2-0 in MAC play, and finished the year ranked No. 10 in the Great Lakes Region.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:
Schauls’ previous coaching experience includes four seasons (2007-10) as the varsity assistant at West High School in Waterloo, Iowa. Schauls participated in all phases of coaching and specialized in goalkeeper instruction and training. West High produced an all-conference goalkeeper in both 2008 and 2009, and Schauls was a member of the 2009 Mississippi Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. He has also coached at the No. 1 Soccer Camps in Fulton, Mo., and Kenosha, Wis. Additionally, he founded the Cedar Valley Goalkeeper Camp for youth goalies in Waterloo, Iowa.
PLAYING EXPERIENCE:
As a student-athlete at Wartburg, Schauls was a member of three consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament qualifying teams. He was also an IIAC Academic All-Conference selection in his senior season.
PERSONAL:
Schauls earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Wartburg in 2010 and a master’s degree in sport management from Western Michigan in 2012. He has earned both the National Coaching Diploma and National Goalkeeping Diploma from the NSCAA.
