Hartwig previously served the program as the Women’s Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach (1989-2009) and Women’s Cross Country & Distance Coach (2009-2015).  During her tenure as head coach of the women’s track & field program, the Rochester women won a pair of UAA indoor track and field crowns (1990, 1991) and a New York State indoor championship (2008), and Yellowjacket women earned four All-America honors.  She was twice named Coach of the Year by the New York State Collegiate Track Conference, and is a previous winner of the Region I Coach of the Year Award by USA Track and Field.

Coach Hartwig was also instrumental in the success of Lauren Norton ’12 during the 2012 cross country season, as she compiled one of the finest seasons in Yellowjacket history.  Norton became the program’s first NYSCTC individual champion in cross country since 1987, and went on to earn All-America honors after a 27th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Hartwig is the former Division III President of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and was a member of NCAA Division III Track and Field Committee from 1994-1998.  She holds Level I and Level II Coaching Certification through USA Track & Field, and has also served as the Women’s Track & Field Chair for the USATF Niagara Association.

Hartwig came to the River Campus after two seasons of work as a graduate assistant coach at Ohio State, where she also taught undergraduate physical education classes. Prior to beginning graduate studies at Ohio State, she taught and coached for six years at the scholastic level in Wisconsin.

Coach Hartwig is a 1981 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with dual B.S. degrees in Physical Education and Art Education. She was a four-year member of both the cross country and track and field teams. In her final year at La Crosse, she served as an assistant cross country coach.
