Ross Hunkovic joined the University of Rochester coaching staff in January 2024, and works primarily with the team’s middle distance runners.
A former record-setting runner at SUNY Geneseo, Hunkovic comes to the River Campus after spending the past 11 years as an accomplished coach at the high school level. Hunkovic has spent most of his career at Victor High School, where he served as the Head Boys Track & Field Coach from 2013-2021 and the Head Girls Track & Field Coach in 2023. He has also been Victor’s Head Varsity Cross Country Coach since 2018. During his tenure with the Blue Devils, Hunkovic has coached 22 Section V Champions, 12 All-Greater Rochester selections, and coached 13 medalists at the NYSPHSAA State Championships. He led the Victor boys to the Section V Team title in 2014 and was named All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year that season. Victor’s Cross Country teams were also honored with the Monroe County Team Sportsmanship Awards in 2021 (boys) and 2022 (girls). In addition to his coaching duties, Hunkovic has been a Social Studies teacher at Victor High School since 2012, primarily teaching classes in Government and U.S. History.
Hunkovic graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2007 with a Bachelors degree in History and Secondary Education, and had a decorated athletic career as a middle distance runner for the Knights. He was a four-time SUNYAC Champion, winning titles in both the 1500 meters and 800 meters, and also added an ECAC title in the Indoor Mile. Hunkovic was also a two-time NCAA qualifier in the Outdoor 1500 meters and Indoor Mile, and qualified to two NCAA Cross Country Championship meets. His personal record of 3:49.13 in the 1500 meters stood as the SUNYAC Conference record for ten years, and he was named MVP of the Geneseo Outdoor Track & Field team in 2006 and 2007. He was also inducted to the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. Hunkovic went on to earn a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Geneseo in 2009, and served as Track & Field/Cross Country Recruiting Coordinator at his alma mater from 2017-2018. He also spent time on the staff of the High Peaks Elite Running Camp from 2015-2019, and holds Level 1 coaching certification from USA Track & Field.
