David Cerqua

David Cerqua enters his first season as an assistant coach with the University of Rochester women’s volleyball program, having come to the River Campus following two seasons as an assistant men’s volleyball coach with Hobart College in Geneva, NY.
 
Cerqua joined the Statesmen prior to their inaugural men’s volleyball season in 2024 and helped the program reach as high as No. 9 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Men’s Volleyball Poll, winning 38 games across two seasons.
 
Under Cerqua, the Statemen garnered five All-United Volleyball Conference (UVC) honors, two AVCA All-Region selections and a pair of AVCA All-Americans, as Hobart earned postseason berths to the UVC Championship Tournament in each of its first two seasons as a program.
 
Before joining the Statesmen, Cerqua spent a season as the head men’s volleyball assistant at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, NY, helping coach the Knights to a 17-2 overall record.
 
Cerqua began his coaching career with the VolleyFX Volleyball Club in Rochester, NY, serving as the head and assistant women’s club coach for the program’s 14-2, 16-1 and 17-1’s teams.
 
A two-time graduate of St. John Fisher University, Cerqua was a decorated men’s volleyball player for the Cardinals, earning a pair of AVCA All-America honors in 2020 and 2022. A four-time Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year and two-time AVCA All-Region selection, Cerqua earned UVC Libero of the Year accolades in 2022 and helped the Cardinals to a UVC Conference Championship and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
 
Over five years with the Cardinals, appeared in 122 matches and 463 sets, tallying 1,293 digs, a mark that ranks third in NCAA Division III history, and 256 assists.
 
Cerqua graduated with his bachelor’s degree in sport management from St. John Fisher University in Pittsford, NY in Dec. 2021, and his master’s in sport management in Dec. 2022.
