One of the most respected throwing coaches in New York State and the northeast, the 2025-26 season marks Paul Rose’s 21st year as the throws coach at the University of Rochester.
Rochester's throwers had a banner year in 2025, with the squad combining for nine Liberty League titles between the indoor and outdoor seasons, including five from Jordan Johnson '25. Johnson also earned two All-America honors during the 2025 season, earning Second Team All-American recognition after a 13th-place finish in the weight throw indoors and First Team All-America honors after his sixth-place finish in the hammer outdoors at the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships. Johnson was also named Liberty League Field Performer of the Year for the 2025 outdoor season after winning Liberty League titles in the hammer, discus and javelin.
The 2024 season was also a strong one for the Yellowjacket throwers, with the group capturing eight Liberty League titles under Rose's guidance. Jordan Johnson captured League titles in the weight throw, discus and hammer. Ethan Beer ’27 swept the indoor and outdoor shot put titles. Deziree Garrick ’25 won the indoor weight throw and outdoor shot put, and Aimee Oszer ’27 won the Liberty League title in the javelin. Beer was also named 2024 Liberty League Men’s Indoor Rookie of the Year. Rose also led the Yellowjacket throwers to four Liberty League titles during the 2023 season, with Gillian Reeder ’23 claiming League crowns in the weight throw and hammer, Cora Rose ’25 winning the discus, and Jordan Johnson ’25 earning top honors in the javelin.
Since joining the Rochester staff in 2005, Rose has coached five All-Americans and fifteen NCAA qualifiers, including two-time All-American Mike Burgstrom ’08 and national runner-up Yaneve Fonge ‘11. The Yellowjacket throwers have captured 24 Liberty League titles, seven New York State Collegiate Track Conference titles, three ECAC championships, and an All-Atlantic Region title under Rose’s guidance, and the team has had numerous conference and regional qualifiers in the throwing events.
In 2011, Rose guided Yaneve Fonge ‘11 to one of the most successful seasons in Rochester Track & Field history. Fonge earned All-America honors in the weight throw after finishing second at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a toss of 19.24 meters, the fourth farthest throw in NCAA Division III history at that time. Rose also helped Fonge capture four NYSCTC titles during 2011 in the weight throw, hammer, and the indoor & outdoor shot put. She also claimed ECAC Division III titles in the weight throw and hammer and had NCAA automatic qualifying performances in both events.
Prior to coming to the River Campus, Rose was an assistant men’s & women’s track & field coach at SUNY Brockport from 2000 to 2002, where he supervised the throwing events for the Golden Eagles. During that time, he coached an NCAA All-American, six NCAA qualifiers, six NYSCTC champions, six SUNYAC champions, and an ECAC champion.
A 1999 graduate of Brockport, Rose was a two-time NCAA qualifier in the weight throw, and is the former Brockport school record holder in that event. He was also an NCAA qualifier in the hammer, and finished in the top six at State, Regional, and ECAC competitions a total of 41 times during his collegiate career.
Rose lives in Hamlin, NY, with his wife Karen, also a former collegiate thrower and a member of the SUNY Brockport Hall of Fame, and their four children.
