The Yellowjacket field hockey team lost a difficult UCAA match to William Smith, 4-1, Tuesday night in Fauver Stadium.
The 'Jackets struggled defensively as the Hurons capitalized on two penalty corners to secure the win. William Smith came out strong in the first half, but the Rochester squad was able to hold them off through forcing turnovers. With 9:40 remaining in the first half, the Hurons' Lauren Fuller knocked in a penalty corner, assisted by Amy Kuzio and Tara Baker.
The Yellowjackets came out strong in the second half, playing very aggressively. It paid off when senior Shawnessy Dusseau beat the Huron keeper to knock in a goal less than three minutes into the second half.
The 'Jackets were unable to maintain the monmentum, however, and Fuller knocked in her second goal of the evening, again assisted by Kuzio and Baker coming out of a penalty corner. The 'Jacket defense worked hard, but the Hurons had a wide-ranging game that kept them moving. Rochester goalie Pam Sheffield kicked out four shots, all in the second half.
The Hurons maintained their offense through the rest of the second half, with both Sophie Dennis and Margaret Dolan knocking in unassisted goals late in the game.
The Yellowjackets are now at 4-4, 1-2 in the UCAA. The Hurons improved their record to 6-2, 3-0 in the UCAA. THe Yellowjackets continue their UCAA season on the road at Oneonta and Hartwick on October 4&5, and return home for two UCAA matchups during Meliora Weekend against RPI and Vassar.
