WESTERVILLE, OH (Sept. 6) - Gary Stom scored just five minutes after Otterbein College had tied the score and the Yellowjackets went on to a 2-1 win over third-ranked Otterbein College in the Otterbein Tournament here this afternoon.
The win puts the Yellowjackets (2-1) into Sunday's championship game against the College of Notre Dame (OH). Notre Dame advanced past Palm Beach Atlantic on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie through regulation and double overtime.
Stom's cross found senior Mike Springer for a header 2:09 into the second half that gave the Yellowjackets the lead.
Otterbein equalized at 53:00. Stom broke the deadlock with an unassisted goal at 57:59.
Brian Minehan made five saves, four in the second half, to earn the victory.
Minehan's biggest save came in the final two minutes when Otterbein All-American Angelo Manzo broke behind the defense and tried to slip the ball inside the far post. Minehan dove and made a finer-tip save around the post for a corner kick.
Otterbein reached the NCAA Division III National Championship Game last fall. Rochester is playing two Final Four teams in a span of 10 days. Rochester goes to St. Lawrence, which hosted last year's Final Four, on September 16.
Rochester is 2-1 with the victory. Otterbein is 3-1.
