Washington University scored late in the first half and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over the women's soccer team at Fauver Stadium on Friday night.
The Bears, ranked 17th in the current Division III poll, improved to 14-2 overall, 4-1 in the UAA. Rochester is 9-4-3 overall, 2-3 in the UAA. It was the first home loss of the season for the Yellowjackets.
WU was awarded a corner kick late in the first half. Talia Bucci played it from the right corner through the goalmouth. Rochester goalkeeper Adrianne Hulchanski collided with a Bear attacker and one of her own defenders and could not reach it. The ball landed at the foot of Kara Karnes outside the left post. She drove it inside the right side of the net at 42:47.
Rochester's best chances in the second half all came off corner kicks. Early in the half, Karen Forsythe played it long out of the corner to the back post. It went back into the middle, but Portia Bridges touched it over the crossbar.
Roughly 13 minutes into the period, the 'Jackets earned another corner. Forsythe's ball went long again to the back post. It was headed into the center at the foot of Washington goalkeeper Charlotte Felber. Bridges reached it first and tried to steer it inside the left upright. Her shot was cleared off the line by WU's Breta Kennedy.
Three minutes later, another Forsythe corner went to Kristen Leskow at the back post. Her hard shot got under Felber, but Jessica Deneweth cleared the ball from in front of the net.
Washington had a chance to seal the win in the last 10 minutes, but Lindsey Ulkus' shot from left wing struck the crossbar and Karnes hit the rebound over the bar.
Felber went the distance to pick up the win and her seventh shutout. Hulchanski was replaced at halftime by freshman Molly Leitch.
