Sophomore Emily Lyons scored a career high 15 points in 26 minutes off the bench as the women's basketball team defeated Carnegie Mellon University, 68-51, in the UAA opener for both schools.
Lyons hit six of nine shots from the floor, three of six from the line. She grabbed seven rebounds and blocked one shot.
Jessie Graham chipped in 12 points on four three-point goals. This is the fourth time in five games that Graham has sunk four treys in a game. Graham led all rebounders with eight boards - each off the defensive glass. Megan Fish added 10 points.
Lisa Seacat scored 14 points for CMU. Nora Darcher had 11 points. Carnegie Mellon is 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the UAA. The Tartans have lost three straight.
Rochester is 4-1, 1-0 UAA. The Yellowjackets have won three in a row since losing to top-ranked Bowdoin College in the second game of the season.
With sophomore point guard Emily Bango scoring four points and assisting on two other baskets, the Yellowjackets too command early with a 14-4 lead five minutes into the game. CMU never got closer than five. Lyons scored seven points in the closing minutes of the first half on three layups and a foul shot as Rochester took a 40-27 lead at the break.
Bango finished with six points, seven assists, and four steals. Through five games, she has 30 assists and 20 steals. Last year in 30 games, she had 50 assists and 30 steals.
