Women Pull Away to Defeat William Smith

Four different players contributed to a 10-2 run to open the second half as the women's basketball team pulled away for a 63-50 victory over William Smith College at the Palestra.

Rochester took advantage of cold shooting by the Herons in the second period. William Smith missed its first seven shots from the field as Rochester slowly built an 11-point lead, 39-28, with 14:07 left in the game.

Kelly Wescott (Burke, NY/Franklin Academy) scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second half. Megan Krebbeks (Bristol, NY/Canandaigua Academy) scored six of her career best eight points in the second half as well. Jessie Graham (Seattle, WA/Lakeside school had 10 points and six rebounds.

Stephanie Czajkowski (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) and Marisa Vespa (Watertown, NY/Immaculate Heart) scored 11 apiece for William Smith.

Rochester has won four in a row and stands at 5-1. The Yellowjackets are ranked No. 7 in Division III by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) this week and No. 8 by D3hoops.com.

William Smith is 2-2 after a 2-0 start under interim coach Olympia Scott-Richardson, a member of the Charlotte Sting of the WNBA.

In the first half, the Herons used their defense to best advantage, forcing 13 Rochester turnovers that led to 11 points. Czajkowski scored 10 of her 13 in the first 20 minutes. Two free throws by Paula Foote (Sidney, NY/Sidney) ended a 6-0 run that gave the Herons a 17-14 lead midway through the period.

Wescott converted a conventional three-point play and Krebbeks followed with a jumper off the left baseline to put the Yellowjackets ahead to stay, 19-17. UR built the lead to nine, 29-20, before Vespa scored four points in the closing minute to make it 29-26 at halftime.
