Courtney Shepard made the go-ahead free throw with 23 seconds remaining and Nicole Cerniglia added a clinching free throw with 2 seconds left as 25th-ranked Union upended eight-ranked Rochester, 57-55, in overtime at the Louis Alexander Palestra here tonight.
Shepard's free throw gave Union a 56-55 lead. Rochester rushed the ball upcourt and had three shots at the basket. With six seconds left, Emily Bango inbounded to Kelly Wescott in the lane. As Wescott tried to drive, Erika Eisenhut poked the ball loose. Cerniglia grabbed it and was fouled by Rochester's Megan Fish. She made the second of two shots with 0:02 to play.
The Yellowjackets threw a long pass upcourt to Megan Krebbeks. She tried a 23-foot three-pointer from right wing that bounced off the right side of the rim at the buzzer.
Union (4-0) took a 53-51 lead with five seconds left in regulation on Katlyn Cunningham's driving layup. Cunningham twisted her ankle and was forced to leave the game.
Rochester rushed the ball upcourt and called time with 0:01.8 left. After one Rochester timeout and two by Union, Rochester's Jessie Graham inbounded to Wescott who hit a twisting layup as time expired.
Cerniglia's layup gave Union a 36-31 lead with 11:15 remaining in the second half. Rochester used an extended 14-5 run over five minutes to take a 45-41 lead with 6:35 to go. Fish scored five points in the run and Wescott had four. Cerniglia answered with a three-pointer and Sarah Krammen added a jumper to put Union back in front, 46-45, with 4:15 left. There were two lead changes and four ties in the last four minutes or regulation.
Cunningham led Union with 16 points. Krammen scored 10 and Cerniglia had six. Fish scored 15 for the Yellowjackets. Graham had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Wescott had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was practically a mirror image of last season when Rochester won, 57-56, at Union by making one free throw with two tenths of a second to play.
