Gary Stom's wizardry with the ball helped the Yellowjackets to a 2-0 win over SUNY Oswego in the opening round of the Flower City Soccer Tournament.
Stom set up one goal unofficially by drawing a foul. He figured in the second goal with a good pass into the center of the goalmouth.
Nate Micklos and Ben Cross were the beneficiaries of Stom's ball skills. Micklos buried the penalty kick and Cross converted the pass.
That was enough as the Yellowjackets held a decisive edge on the night. Rochester outshot the Lakers, 24-3, and kept the ball in the Oswego half of the field for more than two thirds of the match.
There were just over 18 minutes left in the first half when Stom collected a pass on left wing and curled into the box. He tried to avoid the challenge of a defender but was hauled down in the box and the 'Jackets were awarded a penalty kick. Micklos drove it, low and hard, just right of the center of the net at 26:40.
Early in the second half, Stom chased down a ball on left wing again. He caught up with it just before the end line and blooped a pass into the center of the goalmouth. It was over the head of Jeremy Goico, but Goico's run to the near post drew the attention of Oswego goalkeeper John Spuhler. The ball fell at the foot of Cross who first-timed it into the low left hand corner beyond Spuhler's dive.
Jack Burgasser played the first 84:04. He was replaced by Aaron Bernstein for the last 5:56. Bernstein made one save, a good deflection of a shot from Chris Krueger that resulted in an Oswego corner kick just before the final whistle.
Spuhler made seven saves in 82:52. He was replaced by Greg Keenan for the final 7:08.
On Monday, Rochester will play St. John Fisher at 3 pm. Oswego will meet Case Western Reserve, a 2-1 overtime victor over Fisher in Saturday's first game.
