Case Rallies to Edge Yellowjacket Women



CLEVELAND - Despite a career high 23 points from senior Ashley Latimer, the women's basketball team dropped a tough 65-57 decision at Case Western Reserve on Friday night.

Five players contributed to a 10-1 run down the stretch as the host Spartans pulled out the victory.

Jessie Graham made two free throws with 5:11 left to give Rochester a 53-50 lead. CWRU edged ahead, 54-53, on Maria Jackson's jumper and two free throws from Amber Hammell. Emily Lyons made one free throw for UR, tying the game at 54-all with 3:31 to play. Dana Dempsey hit a jumpshot for a 56-54 lead with 3:16 left and the Spartans took the lead for good.

Two free throws by Keesha Allen stretched the Case lead to 60-54 with 49 seconds left. Rochester rallied to within 60-57 with 32 seconds left. Danielle Muller stole the ball and fed latimer for a layup. She was fouled by Dempsey and sank the free throw, pulling Rochester within 3.

CWRU sank five free throws in the final 29 seconds to seal the victory.

Hammell scored 14 points for Case. Allen added 13, and Dempsey finished with 10. Carmen Rowan grabbed a career high 19 rebounds for CWRU (2-4 UAA, 7-9 overall).

Rochester put together a magnificent first half flurry, outscoring CWRU 18-0 to take a 36-22 lead with 1:34 left in the half. Graham started the outburst with a three-point goal. Jamie Mooney hit two treys in the run. In all, five players contributed to the scoring.

The Yellowjackets hit six of nine shots in the burst. On two of the misses, they got the offensive rebound and promptly turned it into points. Joy Sadaly's jumper was blocked out of bounds by Case. Graham inbounded long to Mooney who quickly drilled a three for a 27-22 lead.

On the next trip downcourt - after Sadaly stole the ball from Ashley Horton - Mooney missed a layup on the break, but Sadaly rushed in to clutch the rebound and score on the putback for a 31-22 lead.

At the other end of the floor, the Spartans missed nine shots and turned the ball over four times.

Graham scored 12 points and matched her career high with 11 rebounds.
