Nate Micklos scored two goals and Gary Stom had one as Rochester defeated NYU, 3-0 in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams at Edwin Fauver Stadium here today.
Micklos and Stom scored five minutes apart midway through the first half to help Rochester take command. The Yellowjackets have a 19-match unbeaten run dating back to last season.
NYU had two streaks snapped with the loss. The Violets had won seven in a row, were unbeaten in eight straight, and had a scoreless streak of 478:58 heading into today's game.
That shutout streak was noticed by Rochester head coach Chris Apple. “They (NYU) work their tails off to get people behind the ball,” Apple said. “You're attacking against seven people.”
Rochester broke the streak at 25:45. Micklos tried to cut around NYU's Nick Katsanos just outside the left edge of the penalty area. He was pulled down, earning a free kick for Rochester and a yellow card for Katsanos. Colin Fernie took the free kick. He struck a low ball into the center of the box which Micklos turned into the lower left corner for a 1-0 lead.
“A great ball from Fernie,” Micklos said. “We talked about getting good runs through the box.”
Five minutes later, Stom dribbled into the left side of the area. His cross was blocked by the defense and landed at his feet. He slid the ball inside the left post at 30:28 for a 2-0 lead. They each threatened early in the second half. Thirteen minutes after the restart, Stom cut in alone and Katsanos had to tackle the ball away for a corner kick. Micklos headed the ensuing corner into the crossbar.
Micklos made it 3-0 at 72:24. Stom stole the ball on right wing and played it into the middle. Micklos went around his marker, then came in alone to beat NYU's Daniel Baker to the low right corner.
Rochester improves to 8-0 overall, 1-0 in the University Athletic Association. NYU is 7-2-1 overall, 0-1 in the UAA.
