Amy Thompson scored on a long free kick midway through the second half to give the women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Nazareth College at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Wednesday night.
Molly Leitch made three saves in the second half to earn the victory. Adrianne Hulchanski played the first 45 minutes and did not make a save. It was Rochester's 10th shutout of the season.
Shannon Burns made five saves in goal for the Golden Flyers. Nazareth is 9-5. Rochester is 10-1-2.
Nazareth's Kristina Cristofori had a part in the two best scoring chances for the Golden Flyers. Early in the second half, Nazareth earned a free kick slightly to the right of the penalty arc. Cristofori took a tap from Julie Birbilis and drove the ball straight on which Leitch caught just under the crossbar.
Less than 10 minutes later, Cristofori stripped a Rochester defender of the ball and placed a pass onto the foot of Rachel Cushman streaking downfield. Cushman roared in alone but Leitch charged off the line and blocked the long shot wide of the goal for a corner kick.
Rochester finally snapped the tie at 66:32. The Yellowjackets were awarded a free kick along the right sideline, 10 yards over midfield. Thompson hit a long line drive that sailed over everyone, including Burns and nestled just below the crossbar.
