Game Recap: Field Hockey |

'Jackets Blanked by Red Dragons

By: Rachel Askin

In their last homestand of the season, Rochester lost a hard-fought game to SUNY Oneonta this afternoon by a score of 1-0. Senior Kate Yarmowich (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg) scored the game's only goal off of a penalty stroke.

With 18:57 left in the second half, freshman Somer Shuffield (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) took a hard shot from three yards in front of the net. Sophomore goalie Rachel Cahan (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) made a diving save on the ball, but couldn't find it afterwards. She had inadvertently covered the ball, which, by rule, forced a penalty stroke for the Red Dragons. Yarmowich drove the ball just under Cahan's arm to put Oneonta ahead.

Rochester dominated play for the rest of the half, peppering senior goalkeeper Lindsey Hendricks (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg) with shots from every angle. Hendricks turned away all of them, though, earning her fifth shutout of the season.

The Yellowjackets earned 13 penalty corners, eight of which came after Oneonta's goal. Rochester outshot the Red Dragons 12-10; both Cahan and Hendricks tallied six saves on the game. Both teams now have a record of 10-8.

Rochester's next game is Friday, November 4, against second-seeded Skidmore in the Liberty League Championship Tournament. This is their first appearance in League Championships. The tournament will be held at William Smith College; if the third-seeded 'Jackets win, they will play the winner of #1 William Smith vs. #4 Union.
