The Yellowjackets defeated the Union College Dutchwomen Friday afternoon by a score of 2-1. Rochester and Union were tied for third place in the League going into today's matchup; after today's win, the 'Jackets are tied for second place with Skidmore.
The Dutchwomen scored first just over ten minutes into the first half when senior Kristin Murphy (Branford, CT/Branford) dumped the ball into an open net. Sophomore Rachel Cahan (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) made a head-first diving save off a hard shot and the ball bounced right to junior Jessica Trotter (St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs). Trotter one-timed a pass to Murphy who scored from four yards in front of the goal.
Senior Courtney Nussbaum (North Salem, NY/North Salem) tied the game for Rochester with 6:31 left in the first half. Junior Celi Fletcher (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) took a shot that was blocked by a Union defender. Nussbaum picked up the rebound on the left side, spun around freshman goalie Elise Wakeland (Arundel, ME/Kennebunk) and buried her shot in the back of the Union goal.
Rochester came out strong in the second half and converted a goal after just 1:15 of play. Fletcher passed the ball right to left across the goalmouth to sophomore Kari Plewniak (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home). Plewniak shot from three yards out and easily scored past Wakeland, who had come out to try to intercept the pass.
Union earned three penalty corners with less than a minute left in the game, but despite Murphy's hard shots, the offense was unable to score.
The 'Jackets play Skidmore – another tough Liberty League opponent – tomorrow afternoon at 2pm in Edwin Fauver Stadium.
