Rochester Topped By Skidmore in OT

By: Rachel Askin

Skdmore defeated the Yellowjackets this afternoon – despite tremendous defense from junior Heidi Davies (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) – when senior Emily Clark (Saratoga, NY/Emma Willard) scored off a penalty stroke with 1:57 left in overtime. Clark's game-winner was the second penalty stroke for the Thoroughbreds in OT.

The 'Jackets' goal came off a deflection by Revay Wilson (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) after just 3:58 of play. Rochester earned a penalty corner, taken by Kari Plewniak (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home). Plewniak delivered the ball to Mary DiMatteo (Belmont, MA/Belmont) who passed to Krista Butler (Carmel, NY/Carmel). Butler took a hard shot to the right side where Wilson was stationed and she deflected the ball past Skidmore goalie Stephanie Reed (Barker, NY/Barker).

The Thoroughbreds tied up the score with a goal from sophomore Shaila Delea (Hiram, ME/Sacopee Valley). Clark passed the ball from the left goal line into the middle where Delea was waiting; Delea one-timed the ball through traffic and past sophomore goalie Rachel Cahan (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) with 22:30 left in the half.

At 19:22, Davies tallied her defensive save when Cahan came out from the goal to block a shot from the right side. Skidmore's offense got the shot off, but Davies was waiting on the goal line and she deflected the ball out of the danger zone. Despite a fast-paced second half, neither team scored, forcing overtime.

Skidmore had a 2-on-0 breakaway opportunity at 76:15, but Cahan sprinted out to the edge of the circle and blocked a shot from senior Annie Ledyard (West Grove, PA/Lawrenceville). The ball bounced right back to Ledyard who took it to the right side and tried to fire the ball past Cahan, but she quickly scrambled to the side and made a head-first diving save to push the ball out of bounds.

The Thoroughbreds earned their first penalty stroke at 81:09. Skidmore took a penalty corner and on the shot, Davies stopped the ball from going in with her leg. The stroke from junior Katie Weber (Princeton, NJ/Princeton Day School) was blocked by Cahan as she made a diving glove save. One minute and fifty-four seconds later, Davies stopped another shot with her body and on the ensuing penalty stroke, Clark rocketed the ball past Cahan to win the game.

The Yellowjackets are now 7-5 overall, 3-2 in the Liberty League. Rochester's next home game is Wednesday, October 26, against SUNY Brockport.
