Women Defeat #11 NYU, 67-62; Win 5th Straight

The University of Rochester used balanced scoring, tough defense, and clutch foul shooting to defeat 11th-ranked New York University, 67-62, at the Louis Alexander Palestra Friday night.

Megan Fish and Megan Krebbeks scored 12 points apiece for the Yellowjackets. Emily Bango added 11 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.

Rochester has won five in a row. The Yellowjackets are 5-5 in the UAA, one game behind NYU and Chicago. Rochester is 13-8 overall. NYU has lost three straight in the UAA. The Violets are 6-4 in the UAA, 16-5 overall. They are tied for third place in the standings with Chicago.

Rachel Wojdowski scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had six assists for NYU. Stephanie Huhn scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Rochester held NYU to 32% shooting from the floor in the first half and the Violets complicated matters by committing nine turnovers. Rochester hit 46% from the field (16 of 35) and lost the ball just twice.

A jumper by Huhn pulled NYU within 19-15 with 11:30 left in the first half. Four UR players contributed to a 13-4 run over the next 7:22 that gave Rochester a 32-19 lead with 4:08 left. The lead peaked at 18, 40-22, on a Fish jumper. It was 40-26 at the half.

Jessie Grahm's three-pointer put Rochester up, 57-41, with 10:18 left before NYU charged. Karen Bachman scored four points an a 10-1 run and it was 58-51 UR with 6:01 left. Two free throws from Wojdowski and one from Bachman late in the half brought the Violets within five, 61-56, with 2:08 to play.

They got as close as three twice: 63-60 with 41 seconds left, but Bango made one of two from the line with :32 left and :23 left. Then Wojdowski powered home a layup with nine seconds to play, but Bango sank two more free throws to put it out of reach.
