The Yellowjackets held visiting Brandeis without a field goal for the first 17:31 of the second half and went on to a 61-42 victory at the Louis Alexander Palestra here today.
Brandeis hit only 1 of 20 shots from the field in the second half (5%). The Judges finished the game 9 of 48 from the floor, 18.8%. Brandeis is 8-3 in the University Athletic Association, 18-3 overall. The Judges are ranked No. 8 in the current WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 10 in this week's D3Hoops.com poll.
Rochester won its sixth straight game and improved to 14-8 overall. The Yellowjackets are 6-5 in the UAA.
Jessie Graham (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) led Rochester with 15 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Megan Fish (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central) scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Yellowjackets. Emily Bango (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) added eight points, six steals, and matched her career high with eight assists.
Christine Clancy (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) led Brandeis with 16 points, including 12 of 14 from the foul line. Catherine Brady (East Rockaway, NY/Sacred Heart) scored 10 points – all in the first half.
Most of the Brandeis offense came at the foul line. The Judge hit 18 of 22 from the stripe in the second half. Clancy sank 12 of 14.
Brandeis forced 17 Rochester turnovers in the second half – 25 for the game – but scored only nine points off giveaways.
Rochester's defense had 11 steals on 13 second half turnovers by Brandeis (five steals by Bango). The Judges missed their first 17 floor shots until Clancy hit a short jumper on the right baseline, pulling the guests to within 52-42 with 2:29 left.
Graham hit a three-pointer for Rochester 20 seconds later and the Yellowjackets made four free throws in a 26-second span to stretch the lead to 17.
In the first half, a jumper by Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, CT/Windsor Locks) tied the game at 19-all for Brandeis. Rochester closed the half with a 10-3 run for a 29-22 lead. Five different players scored in the run.
