Jen Kaiser and Korry Schwanz scored five points apiece in a 16-5 run that closed the first half and spurred the University of Chicago to a 70-61 victory over the University of Rochester Friday night.
The burst helped the Maroons (8-4 UAA, 15-8) open a 44-27 lead at halftime. Schwanz finished with 14 points. Kaiser scored eight. Susie Gutowski led all scorers with 17 points and Nicaya Rapier had 13.
Danielle Muller scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for UR (6-6, 14-8). Kelly Wescott had 12 points and six rebounds. The loss snapped UR's six-game winning streak.
Jessie Graham and Wescott had four points apiece in a 12-4 run over four minutes that pulled UR within 59-54 with 7:10 left.
The lead was eight when Muller hit a three-pointer to get UR within five again, 66-61, with 1:55 left. Gutowski made a layup and Janae Winner added two free throws with 53 seconds left to seal it.
