Emily Riegel (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and junior Lisa Aronoff (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson) scored less than two minutes apart to kick-start an 8-0 run that propelled the University of Rochester to a 10-6 victory over Vassar College in women's lacrosse at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Riegel finished with two goals and two assists for the Yellowjackets. Aronoff had three goals – all of them coming in the game-turning spurt.
Emilie Moeckel (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) led the Brewers with three goals and one assist. Goaltender Ariel Nelson (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) made 15 saves in goal for Vassar. Rochester's Cassie Glanton (Penfield, NY/Mercy) made eight stops.
Vassar is 6-7 overall, 2-4 in the Liberty League. Rochester is 6-9, 3-5 in the league. The teams came into today's game off one-goal decisions on Friday. Rochester edged RPI, 10-9. Vassar lost at William Smith, 12-11.
Moeckel and Christine Castellan (Media, PA/Penncrest) scored 11 seconds apart early in the second half to give Vassar a 4-2 lead. Moeckel added her third goal of the game 7:49 into the period for a 5-2 lead.
Rochester scored four of its next five goals from the free position – by Riegel, Aronoff, Melina Hong (Amherst, NY/Amherst), and Laura Giusto (Plainsboro, NJ/The Peddie School). The only goal in the run of play was scored by Rachel Hawley (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), assisted by Riegel.
Aronoff connected twice in 18 seconds – she scored at 18:19, assisted by Christina Montano (Henrietta, NY/Rush Henrietta) and at 18:37, set up by Heidi Davies (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan). Montano completed the 8-0 run at 24:02 with Riegel getting the assist.
Ali Fantl (W. Hartford, CT/Hall) scored for the Brewers with four seconds left in the match.
Rochester controlled play. The Yellowjackets collected 30 ground balls. Hong and Jess Colbourne (Jericho, VT/Mt. Mansfield Union) had five each. Vassar had 20. The Yellowjackets also had a 12-6 advantage in draw controls with Hawley winning three.
