Sophomore Niko Mikolenko (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored two goals and Jeremy Mann (Port Jefferson, NY/E.I. Vandermeulen) had one as the University of Rochester defeated SUNY Oswego, 3-0, in the men's soccer opener at Fauver Stadium.
Rochester (1-0) moves into Sunday's championship game against St. John Fisher College. The Cardinals defeated Rhode Island College, 1-0, earlier this afternoon. Oswego and Rhode Island will play for third place at noon. The championship game begins at 3 pm.
The Yellowjackets dominated from start to finish. Rochester outshot the Lakers 21-4, 10-1 in the first 45 minutes. Oswego goalkeeper Greg Keenan (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw Central) made 10 saves, several extremely difficult. Rochester goalkeeper Paco Corbalan made two saves in his first varsity start.
Rochester took a 1-0 lead at 14:45. Brian Tuohy (Sayreville, NJ/The Hun School) played a corner kick through the box and Mikolenko drove it from right wing into the low left hand corner before Keenan could react.
Mikolenko made it 2-0 on a 20-yard free kick to the low left hand corner at 56:26. The kick was awarded after Rochester's Steve Maltzman (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) was tripped at the edge of the penalty area.
Maltzman set up the third goal at 66:03. He pushed a ball from right wing into the penalty area and Mann steered it under Keenan's dive, again to the low left.
Oswego forced a difficult save out of Corbalan. In the closing minutes, Scott Brown (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) tried a backheader that Corbalan batted wide for a corner kick.
