Field Hockey Blanks Vassar

By: Rachel Askin

Rochester beat the Vassar College Brewers this afternoon by a score of 4-0 in the Yellowjackets' first Liberty League competition of the year. Senior Courtney Nussbaum (North Salem, NY/North Salem), freshman Natalie Mroczka (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) and juniors Krista Butler (Carmel, NY/Carmel) and Heidi Davies (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) were the goalscorers, providing the offense to support sophomore goalie Rachel Cahan (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) as she recorded her third shutout. Junior Mary DiMatteo (Belmont, MA/Belmont) was an offensive spark, adding two assists.

The 'Jackets took control of the game early, keeping the ball in their offensive side of the field for the majority of the first half. Although they had numerous opportunities to score, their shots were deterred by Vassar's defense and both teams entered the halftime scoreless.

After just three minutes had passed in the second half, DiMatteo tallied her first assist of the game as she passed across the goal mouth to Butler, who buried a hard shot into the right corner past Vassar goalie Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackley School). With 25:42 left, Rochester struck again; DiMatteo fought through defensive traffic and the ball bounced off a Vassar player to Nussbaum, who pushed a shot past Pomerantz. DiMatteo added her second assist with 18:32 in the game when she passed to Mroczka. Mroczka's shot went straight through the legs of the charging goalie and the 'Jackets were ahead by three. The fourth Rochester goal came with just 10:10 left to play. The ball was hit into play from a penalty corner and Davies' shot rocketed by Pomerantz to give the Yellowjackets a four-goal cushion. All of Rochester's goals game within twenty-two minutes of one another.

Cahan made three saves and dove out to stop a Vassar forward who was charging in on a breakaway. She faced a total of five shots, four of which came in the second half as the Brewers tried to get on the board. Freshman goalie Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) made five saves in the first half for Vassar and Pomerantz made two in the second. The Yellowjackets outshot the Brewers 19-5 and earned six penalty corners as compared to Vassar's two.

Rochester faces RPI, another Liberty League rival, tomorrow at Edwin Fauver Stadium at 4pm.
