In their home opener, the Yellowjackets defeated SUNY Oswego 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. Rochester's productive offense was spread across the board with junior Krista Butler (Carmel, NY/Carmel) leading the scorers with two goals, one in each half.
Rochester scored three goals in the first half and two in the second half. Butler's goals – including the game-winner – were accompanied by single goals from Kristy Johnson (Silvan Beach, NY/Camden), Heidi Davies (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) and Revay Wilson (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland), all of whom are members of the junior class.
Butler's first goal came at 9:27 from a pass from junior Mary DiMatteo (Belmont, MA/Belmont). Butler shot from twelve yards away on the left wing and the ball deflected into the goal off the pads of the SUNY Oswego goalie, Kaitlin Daniels (Sag Harbor, NY/Pierson). The Jackets' second goal (14:34) came from another deflection, this time off the stick of Wilson. Davies took a shot from the left wing that was headed for the right side of the goal; Wilson stuck out her stick and deflected the ball past the diving Daniels into the back of the net. The third goal of the first half (24:35) was scored by Johnson, who lifted the ball into the top of the net off a rebound. Celi Fletcher (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) shot the ball, which was kicked away by Daniels right to Johnson, two yards in front of the goal.
In the second half, DiMatteo recorded her second assist as she passed to Davies from the far right side of the goal. Davies was twelve yards out in front of the goal and her shot rocketed past SUNY Oswego's Ashley Perkins (Oneida, NY/Oneida) at 44:23. Butler's second goal of the game came at 57:05; she scored in close-range off a rebounded shot from Fletcher.
The Yellowjackets out-shot SUNY Oswego by a tally of 29-1. The Lakers' lone shot came from Melanie Hamm (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) about midway through the second half.
Rochester's goalies earned a split-shutout in today's win. Sophomore Rachel Cahan (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) faced one shot, while sophomore Robin Levy (Sharon, MA/Sharon) faced none.
