SUNY Cortland defeated the Yellowjackets, 1-0, in field hockey on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Dragons scored 3:26 into the game but were shut off after that by sophomore goaltender Rachel Cahan. She made 18 saves, nine in each half, and many from point-blank range.
Junior Heidi Davies made two defensive saves and sophomore Alicia Citro made one. Cortland held a 34-2 advantage in shots.
Cortland scored when Becky Osier gained control of the ball in the circle and sent a short pass in traffic to Kelli Johnson who knocked in a shot from about five yards out.
Rochester took only one shot in the second half, but nearly equalized. With just under six minutes left, the Yellowjackets earned a penalty corner. The ball came to junior Celinda Fletcher. her shot from the right side trickled towatd the goalline near the left post. Cortland's Sarah Child had to dive at the post to make a defensive save and keep the Dragons in front.
Cortland is 3-0. Rochester is 1-1.
