GETTYSBURG, PA - Mary Walsh (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) redirected a pass from freshman Kelsey Turley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) into the net with less than 16 minutes to play as the women's soccer team defeated 15th-ranked Mary Washington College.
The win came in the opening round of the Gettysburg College Classic. On Sunday, the Yellowjackets will play host Gettysburg, which is also ranked among the nation's top 25 teams.
Rochester put together a superb defensive effort and held MWC to just two shots – one of them on goal. Molly Leitch (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River) made one save in goal to pick up the shutout for the Yellowjackets.
In the 75th minutes, Amy Thompson (E. Amherst, NY/Clarence) played a long ball to Turley running towards the corner. She collected it, darted deeper into the corner, then served a left-footer into the goalmouth. Walsh hit it first-time over the head of MWC goalkeeper Laura McCarthy.
