Krista Butler scored two goals and Rachel Cahan made five saves as the Yellowjackets defated visiting Houghton College, 2-0, at Fauver Stadium. The win was Rochester's fifth in a row and boosts the team's record to 9-4. Houghton is 6-5.
In an evenly played contest, Houghton had the two best scoring chances of the first half. Kristen Mazzeo made a weaving run through the Yellowjacket defense and dropped a pass onto the stick of Stacy Garber. Her shot slammed off the left post midway through the first period.
With less than a minute to play, Cahan made a series of saves in a goalmouth scramble to keep the game scoreless.
Rochester's best chance in the first 35 minutes came off the stick of Mary DiMatteo. A ball was played into the middle from left wing and DiMatteo tried to chip it home but Erin Frederick deflected the chip for a penalty corner.
Butler snapped a 0-0 tie at 44:02 when she scored off a scramble in front of the net. She had another opportunity with just over seven minutes to play and pushed it just wide of the right corner.
In the closing minutes, the Yellowjackets stormed into the area again and earned an insurance goal. Amanda Case pushed the ball under Frederick's dive and Butler dove at it to sweep it into the empty net.
Cahan's five saves gave her four shutouts this season. Frederick had three saves for the Highlanders. Houghton's Arryn Prince had two defense saves and Elizabeth Mueller had one. For Rochester, DiMatteo had a defensive save.
