Visiting Washington University scored twice in the first half and went on to a 2-0 victory over the Unviersity of Rochester in women's soccer at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
The victory was the third straight win for the visiting team in the series. Rochester had a 16-match unbeaten homefield streak snapped. The last Yellowjacket loss at Fauver came on Oct. 31, 2004 - a 1-0 decision against Chicago in double overtime.
Washington's Libby Held was responsible for both goals. In the 20th minute, the Bears were awarded a free kick over 40 yards from goal along the left sideline. Held's kick was targeted for the top of the net. Rochester goalkeeper Molly Leitch batted it against the crossbar and when it struck the ground, WU's Meghan-Marie Fowler-Finn tapped in the rebound.
In the 34th minute, the Bears made it 2-0. Held took a 38-yard free kick from right wing this time. She drove it into the upper left hand corner of the net.
Rochester applied steady pressure in the second half, outshooting WU 9-2 and forcing Washington goalkeeper Carrie Sear to make four of her six saves. Three of the best chances came in the last 10:30 as the Yellowjackets pressed to cut into the deficit.
With 10:30 left, Eileen Boylan turned with the ball in the box and hit it over the crossbar. Less than three minutes later, Stephanie Klenotich headed a corner kick for the top left corner that was hauled in by Sear. With the game under five minutes, Boylan collected a ball eight yards out and tried to direct it through a tangle of legs and into the net but her shot was blocked by a defender.
Leitch made four saves for Rochester.
The Yellowjackets are 9-1-2 overall, 2-1-1 in the UAA. Washington is 12-2 overall, 4-0 in the UAA.
