'Jackets Nipped by Union

SCHENECTADY, NY - Homestanding Union College scored midway through the first half and withstood a Yellowjacket onslaught in the second half to post a 1-0 field hockey win over Rochester.

The loss puts Rochester into a fifth place tie with Union in the Liberty League standings at 3-3. William Smith is 5-1 (the Herons lost at Skidmore on Friday). St. Lawrence is 4-1, Skidmore is 4-2, and RPI is 3-2. The RPI at St. Lawrence match was postponed due to heavy snow in Canton. It will be played on Sunday.

Rochester had some bona fide scoring chances on Friday vs. Union. Four minutes into the second half, the Yellowjackets were awarded a penalty stroke. Christi Bottcher's shot was saved by Union goaltender Liz Stanford (six saves on the day).

With 2:20 left, Lara Bucarey came through on a breakaway but the chance went by the wayside when three Union defenders collapsed on her. On an inbounds pass after that, Kari Plewniak sent a high arcing shot over the head of Stanford but it hopped wide of the left post. With two seconds remaining, Mary DiMatteo's close-in shot went just past the left post.

Union's goal was scored by Emily French at 17:19 when she pushed home a rebound after a penalty corner.

Rachel Cahan made three saves in goal for the Yellowjackets.

Rochester is 10-5 overall. The Yellowjackets play at Skidmore on Saturday.
