Saints Nip Jackets in Field Hockey



Saeger Philpot scored off a scramble at the right post with 4:42 to play to give visiting St. Lawrence University a 1-0 field hockey victory over the Yellowjackets at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Philpot's goal broke a scoreless deadlock and came slightly over a minute after Rochester goaltender Rachel Cahan denied her on a 3-on-1 breakaway by diving to block her shot eight yards off the line.

St. Lawrence is 4-3 overall, 1-0 in the Liberty League. The Saints have won four of their last five. Rochester had a three-match winning streak snapped. The Yellowjackets are 3-3 overall, 0-1 in the Liberty League.

Rochester dominated the first half but couldn't produce a goal. The Saints charged back early in the second half but Cahan made three of her four saves to keep it at 0-0.

St. Lawrence goaltender Lindsay Taylor produced her biggest save of the afternoon with 13:28 to play when she stopped a penalty stroke by Rochester's Lara Bucarey. The stroke was awarded after Taylor stopped a shot by Rochester's Krista Butler from in close and she fell on the loose ball.

Bucarey tried to direct the ball into the low left corner, but Taylor pushed it wide of the post.

Rochester's best chance for an equalizer came in the final minute. The Yellowjackets were awarded two straight penalty corners. On the second corner, it ball came out to Celi Fletcher. She pushed it to Butler and the shot was just wide of the near (left) post.

The Yellowjackets held a 9-6 advantage in shots and an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. Cahan finished with four saves. Taylor had eight saves.
