Sean Hantes and Steve Welles scored goals just over a minute apart midway through the second half to carry the men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Carnegie Mellon.
J.J. Dennstedt set up both goals which came on counter attacks after heavy Carnegie pressure. Hantes scored his fifth goal of the year at 19:42 and Welles doubled the lead at 18:29.
Michael Peacock made five saves to earn his third shutout this season and his sixth straight victory. Peacock played extremely well in the second half, particularly when the guests threatened to break the scoreless tie.
With 33 minutes left in the match. CMU's Ricky Griffin played a ball from left wing to the right side. The Yellowjackets missed the clearance and the ball came to Ryan Browne who darted into the area and hammered a low shot ticketed for the left corner. Peacock read it perfectly, charged to the edge of the crease, and punched the ball out to his defenders.
With 22 minutes remaining, Browne collected a long ball from his defense and flicked it ahead to Patrick Lutz who roared in alone. Peacock charged out again to cut down the angle and Lutz whipped it wide of the right post.
Roughly a minute later, the Tartans swept in and pummeled four shots on goal. Three were blocked by the defense and Peacock punched one wide. The ball eventually came to the Yellowjackets and was played downfield quickly. Dennstedt got to it, raced down the left side, and put the ball into the path of Hantes. He maneuvered to the edge of the area and lined it into the lower right hand corner as CMU keeper Matthew Bazin came off the line.
Just over a minute later, Dennstedt's pass found Welles on right wing. He moved around a defender, got to the edge of the box, and slid it into the low right hand corner just beyond the reach of Bazin.
Rochester improved to 9-2-1 overall, 3-0 in the UAA. CMU is 7-2-1, 0-2-1 in the UAA. Rochester hosts Emory at 11 am Sunday on Senior Day.
