CHICAGO - Steve Welles and J.J. Dennstedt scored 11 minutes apart in the first half to carry the men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the University of Chicago.
With the victory, Rochester improves to 12-2-2 overall, 5-0-1 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester holds a one-point lead over Emory, which defeated NYU, 4-2 on Sunday.
Jeremy Mann, who scored the all-important tying goal at Washington on Friday night. got Rochester going. He drove home a pass from Timmer McCarthy with 3:23 elapsed for a 1-0 lead.
Chicago equalized at 27:40. Edger Friloux played a short through ball and Kenzo Manners hit a 15-yarder past Michael Peacock to tie it.
Welles put Rochester ahead to stay at 28:15. Dominic Pellingra hit a looping cross into the box and Welles connected on a chest shot for his sixth goal of the year.
Dennstedt pushed the margin to 3-1 at 39:34. Patrick Ripp laid a pass in his path for a 12-yarder.
Peacock made three saves for the win. Steven baron had one save for Chicago. The Maroons are 6-9-1 overall, 1-4-1 in the UAA. Rochester had a 13-10 shot advantage.
