Visiting SUNY Cortland scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the second half to defeat the Yellowjackets, 1-0, in the opening round of the Flower City Tournament at Fauver Stadium.
Erin Reinhardt drove the kick to the lower right hand corner, beyond the reach of Rochester goalkeeper Paco Corbalan. The kick was awarded when Cortland's Bryan Patterson went down in the box as he stretched for a pass.
Rochester held a 12-4 advantage on shots and produced 12 corner kicks. Cortland goalkeeper Jack Carillo finished with four saves. With just under 11 minutes left, Timmer McCarthy whistled a ball from left wing into the center of the box. It found the head of Rochester's Nick Mikolenko and his header forced Carillo to make a punch save over the bar to keep the Yellowjackets off the board.
Jeremy Mann provided some good crosses from right wing through. The Yellowjackets pushed, but couldn't get the equalizer.
Rochester plays SUNY Oswego at 3 pm Sunday in Fauver Stadium. Cortland plays St. John Fisher at noon. In an earlier game today, Fisher edged Oswego, 1-0.
