Rochester opened the 2007 season with a 2-0 victory at Kenyon College, just a day after the Kenyon Ladies had knocked off the nation's #5 team.
Freshmen and seniors made good combinations in the opening match. They each had a goal and an assist - with a senior scoring the first and a classmate setting up the second and the frosh reversing roles - a freshman touching it on to a senior for the opener and a collecting a senior's pass for the clincher.
Tammy Brewster scored the first goal of the year past the midway point of the first half. The Yellowjackets collected the ball on defense and switched the field. It was pushed ahead to freshman Kirsten Ross on right wing. She moved down field, pushed it ahead, and Brewster chipped it over the Kenyon goalkeeper.
In the last 10 minutes, the Yellowjackets got the insurance goal. "Kenyon played a high restraining line throughout the match," said Rochester head coach Terry Gurnett. Senior Ali Streeter put a through-ball onto the foot of freshman Bridgette Varin and Varin directed it into the net for a 2-0 cushion.
Rochester plays at 10th-ranked Denison University on Sunday.
