Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Nipped by Herons

Jamie Tucciarone scored from three yards out in a goalmouth scramble as William Smith College posted its seventh straight victory with a 1-0 field hockey win over the Yellowjackets at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Herons, ranked ninth in this week's NFHCA Coaches' Poll, improved to 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the Liberty League. William Smith is tied for first place with Skidmore in league play.

Rochester is 5-3 overall, 1-2 in the Liberty League. All three of the Yellowjacket losses have come to teams in the Top 20 Poll: #4 Cortland, #20 St. Lawrence, #9 William Smith.

Rachel Cahan made a season's high 16 saves to constantly thwart the Heron offense. That total included a stop of a penalty stroke – her second PS save this year – one minute into the second half.

William Smith attacked the Rochester net and a shot – by Tucciarone - on net got past Cahan. It hit Rochester defender Alicia Citro in the leg. Officials ruled Citro was standing on the goalline and awarded the stroke.

Kaitlyn Hamilton aimed waist-high for the left post. Cahan dove full length to deflect the stroke with her blocker and it rolled over the line.

Four minutes later, she frustrated Hamilton again, this time from point blank range. William Smith's Leila Higgins played the ball from the right sideline along the goalline, two yards from the end. Hamilton tried to rifle it home, but Cahan went low to block it and pushed the rebound out.

The gamewinning goal came at 48:22. Cahan stopped Brittney Paye and Hamilton twice apiece as they kept poking at the ball in front of the Rochester cage. Tucciarone managed to get a stick on it in the cluster and pushed it under Cahan into the cage. It was her second goal of the season.

William Smith goaltender Katie Dekraker made four saves for her third shutout this year. She stopped Rochester's Amanda Case 10 minutes into the match as Case got free and hit a rising shot from 10 yards out.

The Yellowjackets earned a penalty corner with 40 seconds to play. Christi Bottcher targeted the right corner of the cage, but Dekraker deflected it. The ball fell on the stick of Lindsay Bronnenkant and she couldn't get a stick on it cleanly, hitting it just wide of the right post.

William Smith held a 20-6 advantage on shots and a 10-4 advantage on penalty corners.
