PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Early second half goals by Amy Thompson and Eileen Boylan carried the women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at St. John Fisher College.
Both goals came early in the second half when the Yellowjackets came out in an attacking mode and took control of the game. At 48:46, Laura Bojko took a corner kick out of the left side. Her kick found Ali Streeter who tried a crisp header that was blocked by Fisher goalkeeper Ashley Martin. The ball squibbed free in the box and Thompson pushed it into the net.
Ten minutes later - at 58:45, Streeter broke through just to the left of the goal. She crossed the ball to Boylan just inside the penalty arc and Boylan whistled a 20-yarder to the top right hand corner of the net.
Freshman Bridgette Varin was denied her second goal of the season when her shot at an open net (she sidestepped Martin) was blocked in front by Cardinals' defender Alyssa MacLachlan midway through the second half.
The game's first good scoring chance fell to Fisher. The Cardinals were awarded a free kick along the left sideline when Rochester was whistled for an obstruction. The ball was played to the top of the box, where Rochester was whistled for another foul. On that free kick, Fisher's Kelly Seppetella lifted it perfectly over the wall only to see Rochester goalkeeper Molly Leitch punch it against the crossbar and deny the goal.
Streeter had Rochester's best chance in the first 45 minutes. Freshman Kirsten Ross broke down right wing and her cross found Streeter in stride at the top of the area. Streeter's first-timer walloped the crossbar and Martin dove on the rebound just ahead of Boylan's charge into the goalmouth.
Leitch was replaced in the Rochester goal by Kate Levy with 18:04 left in the game. Rochester is 3-0. St. John Fisher is 1-2-1.
