Field Hockey Blanked at William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. - William Smith scored a goal in each half and went on to a 2-0 victory over Rochester in a field hockey match played Wednesday evening.

The Yellowjackets pressed, particularly in the second half, but were unable to create enough dangerous chances in front of the Heron cage.

William Smith took a 1-0 lead into the halftime chat when Sarah Palmer redirected a shot from the top of the circle by Brittany Furlong at 31:12. Each team mustered one shot on goal in the opening 35 minutes.

It went to 2-0 at 43:02. Kaitlyn Hamilton centered the ball to the front of the cage and her sister, Kiersten, touched it past Danielle Pearson.

Rochester's best opportunity to get on the scoreboard came in the 54th minute on a shot by Christi Bottcher. WSC goaltender Katie DeKraker turned it aside to preserve the shutout.

Pearson had one save for the Yellowjackets. DeKraker made three saves. Rochester held a slim 6-5 edge in total shots while the Herons had a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Rochester is 7-4 overall, 1-2 in the Liberty League. William Smith, ranked #13 in this week's Division III poll, is 8-1 overall, 2-1 in the Liberty League. Both Rochester and William Smith lost at RPI last weekend.

The Yellowjackets travel to Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday and visit Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday.
