Saints Edge 'Jackets in OT

Emily Riley tipped in a pass from Brooke Maloney just 2:57 into sudden death overtime to give visiting St. Lawrence University a 2-1 victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The victory clinches homefield advantage for the Saints in the Liberty League championships, scheduled for November 7-8. SLU finished 6-1 in the league. The Saints are 11-4 overall. St. Lawrence tied Skidmore for the Liberty title but won on a tiebreaker, a 4-3 shootout win over Skidmore earlier this season.

Rochester completed its Liberty League season at 2-5. The Yellowjackets are 11-7 overall with two games remaining – against Brockport on Wednesday (site to be determined) and home vs. Oneonta on Sunday. The loss snapped Rochester's seven match Fauver Stadium winning streak. The Yellowjackets are 8-2 at Fauver this season.

St. Lawrence scored a late equalizer to force OT, then made a key defensive play in the first minute of overtime. Erika Switz (Ballston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa) knotted the score at 63:21. Rochester surrendered a penalty corner with less than seven minutes to play by obstructing Maloney. A shot by Jennifer Stetson was knocked down by the defense and a scramble produced another penalty corner. The second corner wound up on Stetson's stick. Her shot was blocked by Rochester goaltender Danielle Pearson (five saves). The rebound came to Swits at the left post and she tucked it into the corner.

Rochester had a chance to break the deadlock with four minutes left. Lara Bucarey's lifted shot was blocked by SLU goaltender Emilie Lannamann (eight saves). She then saved two shots by Rochester's Allison Beardsley and the Yellowjackets couldn't get to the second rebound as it rolled across the goalmouth.

In overtime, Beardsley broke through on right wing and Lannamann tackled the ball away before Beardsley could shoot.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead at 45:50. A penalty corner by Erica Gelb was played out to Christi Bottcher at the top of the circle. She swung it to Bucarey on the left side. Bucarey's sweeping shot from left wing was tipped in by Amanda Case at the right post.

The Yellowjackets preserved that 1-0 lead when Maeghan Kirsch (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) made a defensive save on a shot by Joss-Elyse Smith three minutes later.

Thirty seconds before the match-winning goal, Smith was denied again on a defensive save, this time by Rochester's Shayna McKie.
